Background of the study
Land conflicts have emerged as a critical issue affecting agricultural productivity in many rural and semi-urban regions. In Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, Edo State, disputes over land ownership and usage rights have disrupted farming activities, leading to a decline in agricultural outputs. Agricultural productivity is not only a measure of economic performance but also a reflection of social stability, as land disputes often arise from historical claims, overlapping interests, and inadequate regulatory frameworks. Recent studies have demonstrated that unresolved land conflicts can lead to prolonged periods of inactivity on farmlands, adversely affecting both the local economy and food security (Eghosa, 2023; Igbinovia, 2024). Moreover, these conflicts have introduced uncertainty in land tenure, discouraging investments in modern agricultural practices. The interplay between land disputes and agricultural productivity is further complicated by traditional land use practices and modern legal systems, which often fail to reconcile each other’s mandates. This study explores the multifaceted impact of land conflicts on the productivity of agricultural enterprises in Uhunmwonde. By analyzing the socio-economic and legal dimensions of these conflicts, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how unresolved land issues hinder progress in agricultural innovation and productivity. In doing so, it contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable rural development and the importance of stable land tenure systems (Omoregie, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Land conflicts in Uhunmwonde have created a challenging environment for farmers who rely on consistent agricultural productivity for their livelihoods. These conflicts result in the underutilization of arable land, disputes that delay investment in improved farming techniques, and a general climate of uncertainty that undermines confidence in agricultural ventures. As farmers face the risk of losing access to their land, there is a growing reluctance to invest in modern equipment or diversify crops, which further exacerbates the problem. Despite government initiatives to resolve such disputes, many conflicts remain unresolved due to bureaucratic inefficiencies and overlapping claims. This has led to reduced yields, increased poverty among farming communities, and a negative impact on regional food security. The need to critically assess the extent of these disruptions is vital for formulating policies that can restore confidence in the agricultural sector and mitigate the adverse effects of land disputes (Osagie, 2023).
